Solo Adventure

My Solo Adventure!

What is this all about??

Below is the email I sent to family and friends before leaving on January 24, 2016 for 3 months.

Dear Family and Friends,

I hope your New Year is off to a great start.

As many of you know I’m going on a 3 month trip, my ‘bucket list’ solo adventure. With both boys having recently signed apartment leases and doing work they enjoy, and Jeremy and Cooper willing to hold down the home front, the timing is right.

I’m leaving Sunday January 24th and will return late April/early May. I’ll be staying near Ludlow Vermont, Beacon Hill in Boston, Cape Cod, St. Simons Island Georgia, Anna Maria Island Florida and a few places in between. I’m very excited to go on this adventure and am so grateful for all the support, well wishes, use of friend’s vacation homes, books, podcasts, safety tips and offers to visit me if I want company :)

I’ve been asked how this trip came about. It mostly came about due to books I’ve read and retreats and meditation classes I’ve attended over the past 10 years. If you are interested, I’ve included information below.

Many of you expressed interest in knowing what I’m up to during the 3 months. Since I plan to mostly unplug (limited texting/email/phone calls) and I enjoy taking photos, I set up an Instagram account – loriab4 . I’ll post photos of what I’m seeing, reading and experiencing. I’m hoping to have some fun photos to post!

I hope 2016 is a wonderful year for all of us,
xo

A Year by the Sea by Joan Anderson
I read this book 10 years ago and the dream of a solo trip was born!

The Joan Anderson retreat
I am attending in Chatham (Cape Cod) 4 weeks into my adventure

Finding the Deep River Within: A Woman’s Guide to Recovering Balance and Meaning in Everyday Life by Abby Seixas
I first met Abby in 2006 when I signed up for an 8 session Deep River group in Concord. Since then I have attended many of her meditation groups and retreats. I’m so grateful for all I have learned from Abby and all the women I have sat in circles with over the years. From a review, ‘…Abby Seixas has taught women how to slow down and reclaim their lives from the tyranny of their to-do lists.’

The Marriage Sabbatical: The Journey that Brings you Back Home by Cheryl Jarvis
When I told Jeremy of my desire to travel solo, he googled ‘women solo trip’ or something like that and found this book. I read it and found it very interesting. The author ‘provides a comprehensive, thoughtful and inspiring look at how married women can love and care for their families and still find a concentrated period of time to invest in realizing their dreams.’

Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachusetts
I have attended 4 weekend retreats at Kripalu and loved them all, only one involved yoga. The setting is beautiful, the people are kind and the programs can be life changing. With the addition of the Annex (modern rooms with private bath), it’s been a perfect weekend getaway for me.

Cupcakes from my girlfriends celebrating my trip, thank you all!
